24/01/2018 - Extension to Mandatory Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupancy

Mandatory licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMO's) came into force in 2006 and applies to properties of three or more storeys, five or more people in two or more separate households. Licensing has been successful in driving up standards and making HMO's safer places to live. Legislation is to be put before Parliament in 2018 to remove reference to storeys, so most HMO's occupied by 5 or more people will be subject to mandatory licensing, and will now include flats. A minimum room size for sleeping accommodation is also to be introduced.
